REVIEWS

“…while chaotic sine tones seeped through in von Bemberg’s own work A Day in the Life (2024), [Bless Amada] portrayed stress in a way that many could probably relate to. Since then I have been thinking about what Amada did when the anxiety and mental turmoil set in. Not only did he sit down and read Rilke on stage, but he also started playing a vinyl record: the now 71-year-old Swiss composer Jürg Frey’s 4th string quartet“

“What I really like about Messiaen’s music is how he uses the piano and transfroms it into a sounding object that does no longer remind me of the piano as such.“
Interview with Rie Koch for DR P2 6 July 2024

“Nikolaus von Bemberg is the pianist who plays a grand piano, a Casio keyboard, a Roland Juno 60 (an ’80s synth), and a small MIDI keyboard — and at the most moving part of the piece: all four keyboard instruments at the same time. Like another Bill Evans (on the album From Left to Right), he lets both hands play these four very different instruments simultanously.“

“the concert revealed that Copenhagen’s music scene has fostered in Bemberg a pianist who not only masters the temperaments of Messiaen, but also offers bold visions for staging and participating in the far-out creations of young composers.“

“An erotics reminiscent of the frustrating post-industrial muteness of Cronenberg’s Crash — Which is to say an erotics that tarries with the difficulty of authentic enjoyment in a world that seeks to foreclose its possibility.“

BIOGRAPHY

Nikolaus von Bemberg is an award-winning pianist and composer known for his surprising and unconventional concert programs. He specializes in contemporary works with interdisciplinary and performative elements. He realized recently an artistic research project at the Royal Danish Academy of Music in Copenhagen, examining the role of the classical pianist in the concert hall and expanding it through experiments. As a composer, he works in the fields of music theatre and film music. In his works, he stages classical and contemporary music and places them within a fragmented yet accessible aesthetic that combines field recordings, DIY video, electronic sounds, lo-fi elements, songs, and spoken language. Together with protagonists from theatre, film, visual arts, and performance art, Bemberg develops and realizes interdisciplinary projects.
